How it works

Tap Start Drive. Then just drive.

No route to enter and nothing to watch. Speed Alert LA runs in the background next to your maps app, even with the phone locked.

  1. Start a drive

One tap before you set off. Monitoring runs only during a drive you start.

  2. Hear the heads-up

“Speed camera zone ahead. Speed limit 35 miles per hour.” Through your phone or car speakers, at 2,000, 1,300 or 800 ft.

  3. End the drive

Location stops the moment you finish. Nothing is uploaded, ever.

Questions

LA speed cameras, answered.

Is there an app that warns you about speed cameras in Los Angeles?

Yes. Speed Alert LA gives a short spoken heads-up before each of the 125 City of Los Angeles speed camera zones on the road you're driving, with the posted speed limit. It runs alongside Apple Maps, Google Maps or Waze, keeps working with the phone locked, and plays through the phone or car speakers over Bluetooth or CarPlay.

Is there an LA speed camera app for Android?

Yes. Speed Alert LA has a free Android beta (Android 8.0 or newer) that you can install from speedalertla.com/android. The iPhone version is coming to the App Store.

Where are the speed cameras in Los Angeles?

LADOT plans 125 speed camera systems (246 cameras on poles) across the city, each on a street segment between two cross streets. As of October 20, 2026, 26 systems were switched on in their warning period and 99 were under construction. The full list with a map is at speedalertla.com/cameras.

When do LA speed cameras start giving tickets?

LADOT set October 26, 2026 as the program start. For the first 60 days after cameras start on a street, drivers get warning notices instead of tickets, and each street that gets cameras later starts its own 60-day warning period.

How fast do you have to go to get a speed camera ticket in LA?

Cameras record vehicles going 11 mph or more over the posted speed limit. The posted limit is still the law; 11 mph over is only the point where a camera records a violation.

How much is a speed camera ticket in Los Angeles?

$50 for 11–15 mph over the limit, $100 for 16–25 mph over, $200 for 26 mph or more over, and $500 for 100 mph or faster. These are civil penalties with no points on your driving record. A vehicle's first violation at 11–15 mph over is a warning notice.

Do Waze or Google Maps show LA speed cameras?

Maps apps may show some cameras through user reports. Speed Alert LA uses LADOT's official list of all camera systems, with the street segment, direction and posted limit, and only alerts for cameras ahead of you on the road you're on.

Does Speed Alert LA track my location?

No. Camera matching happens on your phone. There is no account, and your location and trips are never uploaded.
